I recently retuned a banjo I hadn't played in almost a year by ear, without a tuner, just tuning it to something that sounded okay to me. I knew it wasn't my usual tuning (I have generally been playing in "Double C" tuning), but I quickly picked out a few fun tunes to play, making up some new stuff that I liked the sound of. After messing around with it for a while and enjoying what it was doing, I checked to see what it was I had come up with, and it was:

fBbFBbD (or fA#FA#D)

-- so basically, an open Bb chord.

I'm sure I can't be the first one to have tuned this way, but I was wondering how common it might be, or if there was a common name for it or whatever. It's been fun to play around with!

Same as "open C" -- g CGCE -- one whole tone (2 frets) lower.

You Beat me to the answer, this is the tuning used to play Beartracks. I use this tuning occasionally, sometimes C tuning but I never use double C.

One of Uncle Dave Macon's favorite tunings.

Also the same as the open B tuning used sometimes by Tony Furtado and Tom Adams.
