I'm delighted to have been asked to pick a tune for clawhammer totw, and I went for something from the Hammons family legacy in West Virginia.
The tune I chose sounds simple, and is short. But simple and short is hard to play!
youtu.be/S84UsXAEf08 is Dwight Diller and Darin Gently's version, and has the feel that I was aiming for in my version: with a kind of lively jump in its step. It's just simply brilliant, and is the reason I picked this.

This free download, written by Dwight Diller and others, (probably members of the BHO?) includes a tab for Kitty Snyder and says that the tune seems to originate with Lee Hammons. It's on page 26. Screen shot included just for info.

Many of the recordings and books referenced on line are no longer available, but there must be a real treasure trove of material out there. I suspect many of you will have access to those field recordings of the Hammons family. I expect you to tell me how brilliant they are! Mostly it seems these exist now because of the foresight of Mr Diller. Thanks Dwight!
Anyway, don't be fooled by the simplicity of this tune, play it, record it, and post a link here. I want to hear lots of versions please!

Thanks! When it's easy to learn the notes, it's often hard to make them into music. I was pleased with this one, eventually!

Exactly right.
I recall the great Ozarks fiddler Bob Holt sometimes commenting;
"That's a good tune, but I can't get much music out of it."
Usually the tune in question was a "simple" one.
For me, Sally Goodin' has been one of those.
It got turned into a contest showpiece, but the best
versions to my mind were earthy and simple like this:

The screenshot below is at the end of the video. Dwight had introduced Kitty Snyder as the last tune, stating he hoped he remembered it. You can see he was pretty happy when he finished and he did play well. Using the tuning dGDGA on cello banjo, equivalent to double C but lower, I was only a half step from Dwight's fiddle. He had a couple of ways of playing the B part and I chose one. The low pitch of the cello banjo sounded nice with the fiddle when I played along. It's more resonant in person than on the iPhone recording.

I googled "tunearch Kitty Snyder" which normally brings of the fiddle transcription on tunearch.org, and only got a web site for an actual Kitty Snyder: "Kitty is a songwriter-singer-guitarist-pianist in the folk-dream-pop realm". She should make up her mind on the instrument and the realm.
I can't listen to the playing above....my wife is up and it is our mutually agreed quiet time. Later this morning!

Previous recording I just mentioned was recommended by the superb music guy, Ted Gioia, whose book Music: A Subversive History I highly recommend. He has a (paid) newsletter too that is worth reading. Not strictly old time/bluegrass though. But who drinks just one kind of wine?

I found lots about that Kitty Snyder too! Much more about her than her namesake!

A long time ago, a friend gave me a copy of

While there are two cuts, of "Kitty Snyder" on it, I'm not sure if it's legal for me to upload it. If I did, I would make it so it can be listened to but not downloaded. Appreciate any, and all, thoughts about that. It looks like the recordings of Kitty Snyder and others were made by Wayne Howard. Some of the other recordings on the CD were made by Dwight.

Carl, the Cultural Traditions seems to still exist and has a website. It’s very closely connected to Dwight, and sales of his many fine cds benefit the program. You might want to check with him. This would a terrific recording to share.

Thanks Janet, your cello banjo version works very well. I don't have room in my life, or my house, for any more banjos, but hearing you play that makes one quite tempting.
