I watch and listened to all the interviews (parts) of Sonny and it was very interesting! Thanks for posting!

Great post Tom. thanks. I love the 3:00 mark where the man is asking Sonny a question. Look at his eyes and the intensity of his listening. Great stuff.

Intersting, him talking about the amphetamines/speed days. I’d like to know what song he played that he can’t remember how on earth he did it.
Ever notice how many professional guys got thin in the 1970’s? lol

I miss Sonny & J.D. so much as musicians and as people. the music part is obvious. The people part: they just put sooo much into it and got and gave sooo much out of it. Their passion, and dedication. and man all things banjo were revered.

Speed/amphetamines has been a major part of anything with grueling endurance for decades.
In the 50's/60's, before doping all the Tour de France riders were on it. They used to get hyperthermia in the alps because they were too hopped up to notice.
Truckers,,, Just listen to the lyrics on Six Days on the Road.
Baseball players. 160 games in 200 days??? No wonder they used it.
Touring musicians,,, no wonder!!!!

Nice interview, had not heard his thoughts on the melodic shift. This is the most in-depth interview with Sonny I've seen (over 2 hours), very intimate:

kentuckyoralhistory.org/ark:/1...4f47gt98f

(I am not convinced he really needed to take that stuff, grueling schedule or not. But that was all too common then, and there are plenty of dangerous options now I'm sure. Stay healthy.)
