I have a Pisgah Woodchuck that I love. It truly sings in Double-C. I have found myself wanting a second open back so I don't have to retune all the time to G, etc.
I went today and played several banjos from economical to expensive. I've been saving money and had been given a gift as well towards the purchase and could pretty much get what I wanted. After playing everything in the shop I settled on the Gold Tone CC-Carlin 12". I was really surprised this is what I decided on. There were some very nice banjos there, but none of them seemed worth the extra $1000-$1500 over the CC-Carlin, especially with this being a second banjo.
It sounds very nice and plays really well. I took someone with me and had them kind of blind listen to each banjo and they choose the CC-Carlin as well, not knowing which banjo I was playing. For $549.00 it seems like a great deal.
I still like my Pisgah better but I also had it professionally set up which really took it up a notch, but for the money this CC-Carlin is a surprise find.

No. I prefer 12" and several of the ones I tried were 12".

I have a CC-100+ and I think it is a great open back banjo. I configure it all kinds of different ways and get whatever sound out of it that I want at the time from BG old time.
Glad to hear that you found what you were looking for and didn't let price decide.

I tried a CC Carlin 12 in a store once and like you I was quite surprised at the great sound rolling out of it. I thought it was significantly better than some more expensive banjos too. I think my current Mogi banjo sounds and plays better than banjos costing 3X as much. Whatever floats your boat! banjered
