This is very sad news, I'm glad I've been offline the last few days, Christmas would have been a lot less merry had I known of his passing. RIP JD. You were a mighty giant. I wonder how much time I have spent trying to figure out his breaks. A ton. He was pure genius.

Thank you for sharing personal memories, Bob Rodgers. Certainly one has heard right and left over the years that JD Crowe was a wonderful friend and person, but these statements are almost 100% made with zero particulars. This is the first glimpse I've had as to what he was like as a person, and it is a delightful glimpse. May he rest in peace, and condolences on the loss of your old friend and partner in laughter and fun.

I remember opening for JD at Clay City. Talk about nervous, knowing he was just behind the wall and could hear all of my mistakes. As always he was very gracious and complimentary. The other great memory is being in Bill Sullivans basement with JD as they were laying the groundwork for the Gibson "JD Crowe" RB75 re-issue and laying his banjo on the copier so they could accurately recreate the inlays.
Rest easy JD. Prayers for his family.

I was fortunate to see JD and have a few conversations at the Sugar Maple festival near Madison WI in August 2009. The event was organized by Mark Hembree, the only Bluegrass Boy I know of from Wisconsin.
It was interesting to watch JD a few times, out of microphone range, coach Rickey Wasson on what to say as emcee. There was a performance in the afternoon and another later in the evening. When not busy, JD was willing to talk to anyone, even late into the evening after the last performance.
At one point I asked JD if they had other performances scheduled in the area. Nope, they just drove up in a van for the day and would drive back later. I said that must be a long day with the driving and everything. "Nah, we take turns, it's not bad".

I went to J.D.'s funeral today. It was very uplifting and moving. No sobbing or tears, just a peaceful celebration of a life well-lived. There were lots of photographs and recordings during the time leading up to the service. The service had three ministers all of whom knew J.D. well, and one of which had some very funny stories. The only music during the service was when Ricky Wasson got up with a guitar and sang a song. It was one of the nicest funeral services I have ever attended.

This is unbelievable and I had to tell you this. J.D. was buried at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. I was re-reading Marty Godbey's book on J.D.. My jaw dropped when I read the line on page 3: " The house where they (J.D.'s boyhood house) lived is no longer standing, but the office of present day Bluegrass Memorial Gardens Cemetery is on the same spot. "The cemetery was on my mom's brother Milton Nichols' farm." J.D. said."
You want to talk about going home? This somehow seems good.

I said Good for you, In 2016 He was to be inducted into the American Banjo Muesum Hall of Fame, He called me wanting me to go with him, I accepted, Big Mistake. We got there on a wednesday afternoon. He was worn out, I was worn out, All we wanted was a pillow to lay our heads on. The next day he wanted to go to the National Cowboy and Western Muesum. , I agreed to go, 2nd mistake. We got there at 10.30 am. He was like a kid in a candy store, His eyes were glued on every object displayed, 25,000 to be exact. I knew I was in for a long walk, He would say, Bob I want you to look at this, Can you believe we,re looking at the costume John Wayne wore in True Grit. This went on for hours. I finally left him and found a place to sit down. One Hr. later I decieded, he must be lost, I started looking for white hair. There he was on his 2nd or 3rd trip around. He wanted me to see this or that, I,ve already seen this J D. Just Buy the Place and come as often as you desire. It was a trip for the ages. My last phone conversation with him was about 4 weeks ago. I knew he was going to a Doctor. I knew he was put on medication. During this conversation, he told me what I had meant to him thru the years. I told him what he had meant to me thru the years. After I hung up, It hit me, This man is telling me good-bye his way. I kept up on his health thru his friends and family members. He and I had relayed we would like to talk one more time when he was able. That time never Came, Yesterday morning around 5.30 AM His son David called to tell me Dad has passed away. I Lost a True Friend,, RIP
