Old Skedaddalink

The tune “Old Skedaddlalink” was recorded by Melvin Wine (solo fiddle) on his first album “Cold Frosty Morning” (Poplar Records, 1976).

“Melvin learned the tune from his father and has known it since he was teenager. He says he heard Senator Byrd call the tune 'The Mountain Hornpipe' “(Donald Beisswenger, Ph.D. Thesis, “Fiddling Way Out Yonder: Community and Style in the Fiddle Music of Melvin Wine”,The University of Memphis, 1997).

Sarah Blake Singleton also played this tune (scan down to the tune).

“Sarah 'Sarah Jane' Blake (who later became Sarah Singleton) played fiddle. Because she was born six years after Melvin, she did not influence Melvin during childhood, but they have associated with each other throughout their lives. Before her death in 1995, she and Melvin were the principal performing fiddlers with roots in the Burnsville area.” [Braxton County, WV]. (“Fiddling Way Out Yonder – The Life and Music of Melvin Wine”, Drew Beisswenger, University Press of Mississippi, 2002).

I (on banjo - gDGde) played the tune with Melvin Wine (fiddle) and Bob Carlin (guitar) at an acoustic concert, in 1982, at Fiddle Tunes, Port Townsend, WA. Recorded privately by a concert goer, digitized by me and obtained permission to distribute the recording of the concert from Centrum (not to be sold).

There are many versions one can hear of the “Mountain Hornpipe”. Here is one example from Clare Milliner and Walt Koken.

Also, there is a fine flute version of “The Mountains of Kerry” played by Kyle Borley from the notation in O'Neill's “1001 Gems – The Dance Music of Ireland” #919 and also can be found in “O'Neill's Music of Ireland” (also known as 1850), #1745.

Any ideas where the curious first title comes from? We have a word 'skedaddling' which means to run away quickly:

I am familiar with the word "skedaddle" since I was kid, but I know of no connection of the word with the tune.

If you ask me, Carl, you and Melvin and Bob were skedaddling on that 1980's recording as fast as anyone could go.  I tried it in several tunings and play it here in open G.  Your tuning of gDGDE works well, too.  I had to look up that one on Anita Kermode's list of tunings as I feel unfamiliar with it.
