ARCHIVED TOPIC: Remove "Off Topic - Not Banjo Related" from Sidebar updates

Please note this is an archived topic, so it is locked and unable to be replied to. You may, however, start a new topic and refer to this topic with a link: http://www.banjohangout.org/archive/375976

Posts made to the "Off Topic - Not Banjo Related" sub-forum don't show up in the 'Newest Topics' or 'Most Popular' listing on the BHO homepage. I assume there's a reason for this.

However, they do appear in the 'Newest Posts' list on the sidebar. Whatever the reason is for keeping "off topic" off the homepage, it also applies to the sidebar.

I think eliminating the "Off Topic - Not Banjo Related" sub-forum from the sidebar updates will improve the overall quality of the website.

Thoughts?

Alternatively, give users the option to select specific sub-forums to display within the sidebar settings menu.

If you aren't interested in off topic threads, don't click into them on the new posts. Usually you can tell what forum a new post is in.

Some people follow off topic posts and it wouldn't be fair to them to take it off just because someone else doesn't want it there now, would it?

As far as not showing up elsewhere, both the newest and most popular show up because they are banjo related and off topic is not.

First of all, this message is for Eric and not the mods. Mods don't have the ability to make this change.

"Off Topic - Not Banjo Related" sub-forum doesn't show up in the 'Newest Topics' or 'Most Popular' listing on the BHO homepage, and the same reasoning should be applied to the sidebar.

If someone wants to follow a specific thread, they can always subscribe to it.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm saying that it should be an option. The 'newest posts' sidebar has all sorts of options on what to display. This could simply be expanded to include specific subforums.

When you post to the forum, it is for everyone to read and air their opinions. If you want to send something privately for Eric’s eyes only, send him a private message or an email. Your snarky comment aimed at Sherry was inexcusable. You made the decision to post in the open forum (it’s not a “sub-forum”). We mods are members here, just like you. To say you don’t want to hear from mods because they have no power to make the change suggests you don’t want the hear any member’s comments on the issue. Of course, the whole purpose of a forum post is to solicit other members’ comments. I’d think you’d want that, because if others feel the way you do, it will lend weight to your argument.

I just checked Newest Topic and Most Popular on the opening page (banjohangout.org/), and I cannot see any post at all from the Off Topic forum, so it must be a minor problem.

Postings in the Games section don't show up either, but I don't see what the problem is. They do show up in the newest posts sidebar. Is this really a major issue? Someone checking out the site is going to look for banjo related topics, so there is no point in showing games or off topic subjects in the "Newest Topic" or "Most Popular" sections. Once you've joined the community, you may like to venture into the off topic or games section at your own discretion.
