The problem: Far too many media redundancies with no deletions.

Either the chief programmer for this website needs to create a filtering program to eliminate this problem or one of the moderators needs to be assigned the task of cleaning up redundant entries on the juke box and various media submissions. Many examples can be found in the four string sections. For instance, in the "Four String (Tenor/Plectrum) All Songs" section, there are no less than SEVEN identical entries for "Time On My Hands." Why? Obviously because the well-intended entrant didn't know how to properly enter only one submission; and subsequently, did not delete the redundant six entries. This is only one example.  There are many other in the Media section. All this does is take up space someone else might have used and degrade the Banjo Hangout website with useless clutter. Perhaps a filter program could be written to manage and curtail this kind of accidental clutter.

Sounds like you just volunteered

I'd be glad to volunteer if Eric would give me the authority. I have the time and patience.

A couple of points, for what they're worth.

I agree there's a lot of clutter and duplication, however, the motivations the OP ascribes to those duplicates may be a little misplaced.

BHO old-timers may remember some time back when there were issues with posting once but somehow multiple posts were made instead, without the member doing it. It was some sort of code problem that had to be resolved.

There are plenty of examples of multiple MP3 posts like what the OP described. I looked at the one example he gave, and notice that in all seven posts from the same user, the MP3 has the same unique ID that BHO assigns every audio file which is uploaded. In other words, this file was uploaded only once, and there is only one copy with one ID on the server. I think what probably happened is these were uploaded during the time of that code glitch which caused so many unintended repeated posts. You guys remember that many years ago?

Eric may wish to take a look at this before unleashing anyone to do cleanup. In this example of this tune, if one post is deleted, the MP3 is gone forever for all posts because there is only one file on the server, but showing up as 7 different posts. Had it been 7 unique unloads, each MP3 would have a unique ID. That's not what's going on here.

Anyway, my two cents, which I hope makes sense. It will to Eric.

That's a really good point, Frank. Too bad that early glitch didn't get caught and fixed before the system got fouled up. @banjoy

I've noticed that sometimes on admin. reports that there will be multiple entries by the same person. I figured it was a glitch in the system.

After re-reading the OPs post and reading Frank's post, I doubt I have the knowledge to help. I was thinking more about spam posts that are getting out of hand on tabs and blogs. That I could do.

Yeah what Sherry says was a problem too and I remember that ... spammers coming in and using the MP3 area to post their spam ... and I think Sherry is a pretty good spam-zapper, a thankless job I would think ... I believe in the past you zapped a lot of that garbage ... so thanks for that Sherry.

Hey Frank, just curious.

"I looked at the one example he gave, and notice that in all seven posts from the same user, the MP3 has the same unique ID that BHO assigns every audio file which is uploaded"

Where do you find that information? I don't see it anywhere.

It's there, you just never noticed it before. Take a look at the screen shot I made of the BHO Audio Player (which for me on my desktop PC, is a popup window). You'll see the ID right there in front of you. This ID is unique to every file uploaded, and also doubles as the MP3 file name because, well, it's unique and there's only one file by that name.

In this example, the unique ID is "time-on-my-62994-521616432011" and here is a direct link to the file on BHO servers ... note the unique ID is used to name the file. This is a working link, go ahead and click it:

hangoutstorage.com/banjohangou.../audio/62/time-on-my-62994-521616432011.mp3

Same ID shows up in all 7 posts cited in the OP.  Same ID = Same Audio File.

Thanks Frank. I've seen these numbers before but never gave any thought to their significance. Funny, when I did an advanced search of the MP3 Library for the tune the only hit I got was a one named Got time on my Hands by member Rockb59. I then did a page by page search of all the "T" tunes and found them on Page 14 of 18 of tunes starting with "T". I wondered why they didn't show up in the search for that specific tune and then looked more closely at page 14 and found the 7 postings of Time on My Hnads.  Sheesh!  The mind sees what it wants to see.  frown

Yeah, 7 posts with the same typo, another flag LOL!!! I would point out that "Time on My Nads" would take on an entirely different meaning so I won't bring it up devil
