For those of us who play a steel string fretless I’m interested in the type/gauge strings that folks prefer. Also whether these differ from the steel strings folks prefer on their fretted banjo?
My preferences are different; phosphor bronze 10 11 15 23W 10 on fretted, and nickel 10 12 16 23 10 on fretless.
Another personal preference is to almost never change strings on my fretless as I like the effect of less bright strings in the mix. But eventually there comes a point when even the oldest strings are done. This evening I changed the strings on my fretless for the first time in 6 years and that’s what has made me wonder about the choices made by other players of steel string fretless.

I'm right there with you! I just changed by strings on my fretless after a year and i opted for a pair of Martin Mediums - 10 12 16 23 10. I actually put a phosphor bronze 4th on from another set, but i took it off immediately...it just didn't sound or feel right.
