I know that neck of the woods. It still is a bit different than from even Asheville that is not far away. But it can be a bit of time travel when you go deep into those old hills. I know this footage well having first seen it nearly 50 years ago. The predominant use of the backwards roll by Ray on banjo is typical of other pickers like Obray Ramsey in that area.

I actually got to play in a band with him one year around '70 or so at Union Grove. He might have won something if he didn't have such a crappy guitar player....Complete blind luck on my part. I was (and pretty much still am) a dumb ass from New Jersey.

When Lost John collaborated with the legendary George Pegram, the result was Old Time music at it's highest level of expression. Their timing is uncanny.
I love the era of OT music represented by Ray and Pegram. That liminal zone where OT was bumping up against early BG, but still remaining recognizably traditional. A friend jokingly calls it "Tommy and Fred 2.0".
Please check out more of Pegram and lost John, and thank you Janolov.
