Hello! This week I've chosen a simple tune that goes back at least to the Revolutionary War, "The Road to Boston" AKA "On the Road to Boston" and some others. There is much to glean from the Traditional Tune Archive tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:R...to_Boston including the nifty fact that this is the official ceremonial march of Massachusetts (since 1985). It spent much of its life as a fife tune in some fife key before being adapted to fiddle and by association, banjo 
. I learned it in D. I learned it from a fellow fiddler at The Old Fiddler's Picnic in Iowa.

Thanks so much, Billy, for coming through this week with a popular tune I'd never heard of. Hopefully your banjo playing friend will be able to join you for a recording to complement your fiddling. I went ahead and used the notation from fifer William Morris' 1776 - 1777 music collection for an arrangement. The tune was notated in the key of G. I made another tab in double C tuning for Ward Allen's fiddling in the key of D. In 1953 he was the winner of the Canadian open old-time fiddle contest.
