I understand the chord progression. I don't know how to approach it on the banjo. How do I develop a good break? Retune to Gm? Melodic?

No need to retune.Just make sure you never hit an open 2nd string. Do you know the G modal scale? That's all you need.

Job 1 is to figure out which mode of Gm you are in, Aeolian, Dorian or Pentatonic. Do you know how to do that?

I'm familiar with the major/minor scales, and the major/minor pentatonics. I have a basic knowledge of Dorian/Mixolydian. I've played guitar for years and fool around with chord progressions based off the modes at times, but nothing serious.
I'm working out a break for this song based on the old banjo "G Modal" sound. I think G, Bb, C, D, F notes will suffice for what I'm looking for. Maybe add the 6th in for something extra.
