Neil young does play the banjo on some of his other tunes, but he uses a 6 string guitar banjo, not a 5 string. I believe he has a pre-war Gibson GB. Neil's banjo style is more strumming with occasional drop thumbing, kinda like clawhammer. But as others have stated, the recorded version of old man was played by James Taylor on a guitar banjo. Not sure what make and model, maybe Neil's.
