Hi all,

I was listening to this great song by Longview and I noticed this sweet backup lick that the banjo player did after the "in the mood" roll. It goes from 1:30 to 1:33,

I can't figure out exactly how to play it. There sounds like a single string bit on the first string, I've heard JD Crowe do it as well.



Also, there is another nice lick that starts right at 1:34,after the 5-8 slide lick on the 2nd string.

Any help would be appreciated figuring out how to play these, especially with the right hand fingering. I bet that is tricky for the first lick.

Hi silversheltie..The second lick is at 1:35,, it’s a classic Earl backup lick,, found in his instruction book. If you don’t have it, I highly recommend you get it. The first lick is a variation of the second one.

Hi Chuck, thanks for the reply. That's a nice boogie woogie lick and I know it already, I was talking about the little bit he plays immediately before it. I hope that makes sense. I think it may simply a D-position scrolling lick. Now the first lick, I still have no idea about!

Thanks a whole lot for tabbing that out. Would it be possible to add right hand fingerings? I'm not sure about the first bar especially. By the way I noticed some great transcriptions on your homepage before. You've got a good ear for sure.

Thanks so much. One more thing, would you take a look at this lick in Grasstowne's version of Worried Man Blues? The banjo player does this sweet as bluesy lick from 2:30 to 2:33, right after the "in the mood roll". It sounds like he does some sort of bend but its a puzzle to me. I'd love to bring that lick out at my next jam, if only I could figure out what he was doing.
