For this weeks tune we have Kitchen Girl from Virginia fiddler Henry Reed. Its a two part tune in the key of A modal that I bet most of you are already familiar with. On banjo it can be played out of standard or modal tuning. I have always liked the contrast between the major A part and the minor B part. I think it gives the tune a festive feel.  With the holidays approaching our kitchen is always a joyful place to be.

Great and appropriate choice for Thanksgiving, ZD, and nice recording on your part. The girl in the tune title seems to be energetic in the A part, but gets a bit weary of her kitchen work in the B part.  My recording is a generic rendition with bits and pieces of this tune heard over the years.  The tuning is sawmill, which seems to fit the mood.

Lovely renditions by Rick and Janet, as well as the other nice versions listed above.

The Song-a-Week Social Group at Mandolin Café chose “Dinah” this week, and since we know Dinah hangs out in the kitchen—with a banjo player, even—it seemed natural to put the tunes together in a single video. Turns out they make a pretty good pair.

A great pick for TOTW, I'm just shocked that after these many years it hasn't been done before! A very fine, graceful rendition, Zak, it's got that old pop to it that makes clawhammer so unique. I watched Rick's wonderful version on my cellphone with m,y two year old granddaughter, Lyra. It popped up on my YouTube feed while we were watching videos of Elmo. We both liked it. She said "I like it." That's how you know. Janet, of course, is as elegant and luminous always, with her almost mystical approach to the five string. That's why she is an institution here on the Hangout.

My contribution is a banjo duet recording with my good friend and long time collaborator Ed Britt, recorded in November, 2008. I am three-finger picking on my Paramount semi-fretless short scale, tuned aEABE, Ed is playing clawhammer style on his OME Columbine, in sawmill tuning capoed on 2. We still play it today, nine years later, when we go busking together. These tunes never get old.
