I once owned a Ty Piper built banjo, custom Gibson copy that was really nice. Ty built some very fine banjos. Not sure what ever happened to him.

He passed away almost 5 years ago. There is a Facebook tribute/collectors page. His daughter participates there.

I got to play a couple of his banjos at his Oklahoma City shop in 1976 when I was just starting. He also "touched up" my Ome Grubstake and showed me how he set head tension with a straightedge and coin. I took up a huge chunk of his afternoon, left with several inches of fretwire (free!), and he was nothing but gracious.
I'd always hoped to own one of his banjos, but it won't be this one--the bank account says, "Sorry; no way." (Sometimes living on retirement income sucks . . . )
It's going to be a great deal for someone; that's for sure.
