Whew! I was worried the title wasn't going to fit in the subject line...

I set out intending to be the first to re-do an old TOTW, but somewhere in there realized that this tune hadn't been done yet.  Instead I'll do a new one...

Here is a tune that really gained popularity about 12 years ago, Davy Come Back And Act Like You Ought To.  It seems to me it gained popularity after Erynn Marshall included it on her album Calico.  Here is a link to her playing it:

The tune comes from Delbert Hughes.  Here is a link to the original home recording of him playing it:

Finally, here is a link to David Bragger teaching the tune on fiddle.  I think Mr. Bragger is fantastic... he's done some awesome work capturing videos of some of the greatest players alive, is a great player himself, and a good teacher.  While this video is designed to teach someone to play the tune in question on fiddle, I think it makes a wonderful exercise to learn to play along on banjo this way (as opposed to tab, or even learning by ear from another banjo player):

Glad you went with a new one, Mark.  I think this is only the second modal tune this year (Maysville being the other).  To me, modal tunes really are great for getting that fiddle-banjo conversation going.  Davy Come Back is no exception.  Here's another YouTube featuring BHO's Bob Lanham on banjo along with Kerry Blech on fiddle.

Love this tune. There's a nice solo banjo version on Chance McCoy's album Debut, played (I assume) by Adam Hurt, unless someone with liner notes can prove me wrong:

Seems you are correct!  From the liner notes of this great album:

17.> Davey Come Back and Act Like You Ought To: 2:57 Delbert Hughes, Kanawha County, WV

Banjo: aEADE

This tune is unique to Delbert Hughes, a coal miner from Kentucky who eventually came to work in the mines of Cabin Creek, WV . This is one of his many pieces that was played in the ancient "Modal" keys. In this setting Adam takes the fiddle tune and renders it as a beautiful melodic banjo air.

Nice tune! It is just enough like "Click Old Hen" and "Clinch Mountain Backstep" to screw me up when trying to learn it!

This is a good example of how one can present a TOTW just because you heard it and liked it.  Erynn Marshall's always lovely old-time fiddling resembles the original recording of Delbert Hughes, who she said she listened to over and over when spending time in West Virginia.  Adam Hurt's is a beautiful example of his eloquent and innovative old-time style.  Here's my arrangement after listening to the others.  As you say, Mark, listening is the best way to learn, but here's my tab if it will help anyone else.

I learned a nice version of this song from Walt Koken a few years back at Suwannee Banjo camp. It's a fun tune to play when I'm in a modal mood.

That sounds like one that Walt would play the fool out of. I love his swing and bounce. This is a cool tune.

on tune of the week, what happened to the tag that used to be there for getting all the comments on the topic?  It was easy to get back to the topic/tune when you efficiently could get to the email responses.
