So I've got a Bacon tenor style C with a bland, muddy tone. I pulled the head and tension hoop off and, what do you know, there's a round channel routed around the top of the wood rim, but nothing in it. Were these banjos originally fitted with a round rod tone ring, or no? I plan to install one to see if the voice improves at all, but I would be interested in finding out whether this is an addition to, or a restoration to, the original configuration. Thoughts?

I have a Bacon Senorita tenor I installed a Bill Camp B&D tonering, it is now a super banjo.
A 1/4" brass rod ring would improve it , also not sure what head is on it but a new head may in order, strings & a good bridge too. Probably just needs a few things like that & a good set-up.

Thanks for the feedback, Tommy. The head is new-ish Remo, with plenty of body left in it. Strings and bridge are new. The tone ring is the next step, for certain. I'm going to bend and braze some 1/4 stock and see what difference it makes. Any idea if the original style C's had these?

The style Bs I've seen have something like the Little Wonder ring, with bar and spun "sleeve", but the style Cs I've come across have no ring at all. Just a kind of turned bead on the wooden rim. Maybe you could retrofit something like the Style B ring.

I have Bacon's with a big 5/16"+/- tonering with a sleeve & 1/4"steel round & wood bead only.
Polle will be the best source to know.

The gents posting above are right - the Style C was born without a rod ring.
You could at first hand try rolling a ring of steel or brass - 1/4" will however most likely be too heavy - before taking the banjo apart do measure the distance between the fret level and the head - this will tell you how heavy you can make it - without performing a neck elevation or a rim cut.
