Was going to do another tune for this weeks TOTW, but got busy at work and had a small window to record, so banged this oldie but goodie out for this week, a classic banjo song that was first recorded by Uncle Dave who may (or may not) have learned it from African-American sources, not going to get into the meaning of the song, it's been around a long time and recorded under a bunch of different names, so here's just a few, a cursory internet search will turn up a plethora of versions, here's some of my favorite's...
UDM youtube.com/watch?v=4bkLnWN9WSA
Leroy Troy youtube.com/watch?v=V41dO_CSXUU
Doc Watson & Clarence "Tom" Ashley youtube.com/watch?v=Vn1vp8Tf4Y4
Stringbean youtube.com/watch?v=TBEBbaHqzRc
Whitetop Mountain Band youtube.com/watch?v=iKrFPyIan18
Mississippi John Hurt (he titled it "Payday") youtube.com/watch?v=K-p214l5QLI
And probably my all time favorite version is included here...Sid Hemphill, Lucuis Smith, Alec Askew and Will Head...I've included the link for their entire LOC recordings because they're so dang great youtube.com/watch?v=cTjA1a1CjQs listen all the way through and you'll find it...
And lastly, my version is here, a little different take on it, probably influenced by the playing of Lewis "Big Sweet" Hairston, two finger thumb lead on my 1974 Ome "X" tuned a full step down from gDGBD...it's a pretty easy song to figure out, have fun...

I wish there were more courageous souls who would post songs for TOTW!
What really caught my ear was despite the difference in tempo and banjo styles how the recordings by Ashley and RG were so complimentary. I hope that makes sense. Those were my two favorite recordings posted here, btw.
In the grand scheme, I like Big Sweet's version the very best of all!

Ah -- one of the first tunes I learned when I started playing banjo. And I remember how the wife and grandkids laughed about the title. . Here is a 2ftl tab for the tune 2ftlbanjer.files.wordpress.com...reasy.pdf

I first heard this tune played by Bob Siggins on the album Old Time Banjo Project (Electra-7276) which where recorded in the early 1960's. I uploaded his version here: banjohangout.org/song/40190
If anybody want to listen or download the whole album go here: downhomeradioshow.com/2010/09/...oject-lp/ (musicians: John Cohen, Hank Schwartz, Peter K. Siegel, (active BHO member!), Winnie Winstonand Bill Vanaver).

A good song for you down-home mountain boys and a real nice recording, RG. Your banjo is unbelievably expressive! Here's the version I think of:

Here's a nice version (no banjo) that's a little bit different:

Great pick! I'm generally not one for songs, and prefer my OT fiddle tune fare. I haven't sung in public since my forced choir days as a child. But I've been sort of itching to try an actual song to work up for my weekly jam so I can surprise everybody with my craptastic singing voice. Plus, I've been looking for the right 2-finger thumb lead piece to motivate me. I think this one fits the bill on both accounts!

I had some fun with the Electra Old Time Banjo Project which Jan posted. Bob Siggins is the banjo player, though I don't know much about him yet. The tab is pretty straight-forward if you want to try a clawhammer version.

Janet B, what program did you use to make the tab for this song? I would like a good one that makes readable tab so I can do some tabs for my own use (at least to start). Thanks, Tom

Tom, I use TablEdit. You can contact BHO member Matthieu Leschemelle or go to tabledit.com/. It's a great program you can get for either PC or Mac.

Thanks a lot Janet. I thought that might be what you used but I wanted to be sure.
