I'm a new member to this forum so i might to be posting in the wrong location so let me know. I'm changing my strings on a 5 string banjo to Aquila's red series strings. it sounds like they are prone to break which tunning would be best for old time claw hammer?

The most recent all red series are much better as far as resisting breakage; you can easily tell the original reds (fairly bright red) to the later reds (almost brown in color). The newest Aquila (labeled as "New" or "Super" are almost as bright as the reds and are really quite resistant to breakage from over-tensioning.
Your success with tuning without breakage will be dependant mostly on your method of attachment and lack on ANY sharp edges or burrs. Synthetic strings are prone to breakage if they are nicked by a sharp edge anywhere along the string path.
Tuning is going to be somewhat dependent on your particular instrument and it's scale length; many contemporary builders chose 25-1/2" as the most commonly used standard scale for open back use.
Start with double C for clawhammer and branch out from there.
