I just received my calf hide head from John Balch.  I am going to put it on in the next day or two.  Can I use my drum dial on it the same way I would for a plastic head?  If so, how tight is typical for a hide head?  I typically do 90-91 on my plastic heads.

Is it a natural skin already hooped up or raw skin to be fitted

It's a 'feel' thing. Don't quickly crank the tension of a skin head up like you would a plastic head. It'll take gradual progressive tightening over days until it settles and you find the tone you like. The time it'll take will vary from skin to skin. The longest that process has taken me is nearly two weeks but I like my skin heads pretty tight.

My only other comment, if you are taking the tension up high, is beware the additional effect of heated homes in winter. I've had calf skin heads bust before because the dry heat stretches an already tight head just beyond it's limit. Craaaaaaack!

Hello,

Yes, you can use a Drum Dial. I used a DD on my 1928 TB1 with a John Balch head. I use the DD to monitor the slow rise to tension.

Joe:

I don't use a drumdial personally.  I have one (and a drumtorque too) - but I generally prefer to set the tension by sound and feel instead. So unfortunately, I can't recommend a setting.

But there is nothing wrong with your using one.  I 'm sure other folks to too and may recommend their experiences.

If it is helpful ... here are illustrations of the way I approach tightening:  banjohangout.org/myhangout/pho...umid=8629

Thanks again!  I hope that hide head serves you well!
