I had a thread on this a few weeks back. Even though elderly still lists them, I tried ordering and they are discontinued. 😲

If anyone has an old cache they want to sell let me know.

They are now on to new nylgut a red 4th again. Great to play but Im too picky about the looks of that red string.

Not sure what the issue was with super I sure like them on mine.

I started using Aquila Super Nylguts after the Chris Sands strings became unavailable.  Now this?

I like the Super's.  Maybe even better than the Sands.  I've not had a broken "Super" but did have two Sands, wound fourths break, mid span.

I agree, the red string looks goofy.  I liked the all ivory colored supers.  Heck, the way things are going, I'd switch to the Aquila set with the red fourth and they'd discontinue them, too.

I played a old OME Grubstake yesterday that I'd restored for a friend a year or so ago and it's strung with steel.  It sounded and played great!  Maybe it's time to switch back to steel.

One thing about steel, if you break a string, you can be up and running in no time at all instead of waiting for the nylons to "stretch in" over a few days.

So Elderly's website is incorrect when they plainly list them "in stock"?

I just checked with the online, chat guy, Jeffery, and he said the all whites are what they stock and the set with the red fourth was discontinued awhile back (for what it's worth).

Yes, the site is not correct that they have super in stock. I called and they said if I order them they will sent "new" and no longer have super. They are all "new" nylgut. Which the 5b set which is what I alway use is all listed everywhere with red 4th. I think the minstrel set may be all white but different guage.

Look at the Elderly link again.

The "5B" set you always use is listed as "NEW", (as  in ALL Nlygut, NO red...) on the Elderly site.  (Not as in "New Product").  That you can blame on Mimmo Perfello, or possibly an Italian view misunderstanding of how labels are taken in the English speaking world.

Note, "New" IS "super", ALL plain, no red.  You can call them yourself to verify and see if you get the same answer they just gave RV6.

Occasionally you have to ask them to physically verify their statement.  They DO occasionally give the wrong information, but the sets with red fourth are the 1B set.  If you don't want the fed fourth DON'T order the 1B set.  The description PLAINLY states red fourth.

It all seems terribly confusing, but the distinction between the 6 different sets is outlined pretty well on the Elderly website:

The 5B set is the "heaviest" set for normal tuning, although the 7B set is "heavier" but designed for lower minstrel tuning.

The 2B and 1B sets are the same "light" and "medium" tension sets, but with a red series 4th.

The 11B set is "all red with a metal wound 4th, but has been somewhat of a moving target as Mimmo changed the red string formulation in response to breakage issues.  The latest itteration of the "all red" set was to switch to a wound 4th as most users did not like the solid 4th and felt like it lacked tone.

There's a long topic over in the "Playing Advice: Clawhammer and Old Time" forum if anyone wants some of the sorid history of Aquila strings, including a few posts from Mimmo Perfello directly.

I personally prefer the latest "all red" strings, but have moved to the "New Nylgut" as it is a close second to the red strings since I don't want a metal wrapped fourth string.  Aquila strings are a fine product, and the only problem results from the confusing descriptions and changing formulations as Mimmo works to provide an even better product.

It probably doesn't help when there's topics posted with a title such as "Super nylgut discontinued".  It's hard enough for players to follow the permutations of the product without misinformation being spread.
