I am restoring a tenor banjo - 1924 Gibson Jr - and have installed a set of Aquila red from a 5 string. I did consider baritone Uke strings but those in Reds have two wound strings. That means using a wound low D, which I hate. Before when using Nylguts on another instrument I used the unwound string - it sounded tubby and I no longer use these strings. I have ordered a pair of Aquila 79u strings in the hope that these might tune to a D - if they are long enough. Has anyone tried this type of setup? The banjo is tuned DGBD but can equally be tuned DGBE or a tone higher all round. The other possibility is to use a high D as a re-entrant fourth string.
Wisdom anyone please?

Can't help you with those specific strings, but I use the new Super Nylguts (medium), and the unwound 4th sounds great. Not at all tubby.
