You can remove the ruler completely and permanently from a tab by going to File/Options/Screen and then set it to zero in the bottom right corner.

Could well be. I just know sometimes I have opened a tab (maybe downloaded from BHO or someplace, and I see the ruler. Took a while for me to learn how to get it out of the way. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas Jack.

Right. I think what happens is that we grab a tef file and then find the ruler stuck in there by the author. But you are correct in that if we are creating a tab, we start with file /new, and the ruler position is zero which means it is not part of the tab screen at all.
