Last year, I rehabbed an old family Lyon & Healy banjo, but the rim was so out of round I couldn't get a synthetic head on it, so I put on a goat skin head. I sold that one to my cousin, whose father had tried, unsuccesfully, to restore it in the past.

I was so taken with the hide head that I thought seriously about putting one on my Clifford Essex Paragon.

I also have a little 24 3/4" scale Lyon & Healy that I rebuilt back in the 80's and the Five Star on it recently separated from its hoop.

So,  I have put unbleached medium goat skin heads on both.

The Lyon & Healy has a walnut neck with a rosewood veneer on the fingerboard, so I stained that one.

The Essex has a blonde maple neck and rim, so I left that one natural.

I put new strings on each and I'm still tuning the NylGuts on the Essex.

I'm liking the way they sound thus far. The Essex is much better than with its previous Renaissance head.

I have a humidifier on our central air, so its constantly 50-55% in the house and the temp is 76.

Maybe, they won't fluctuate much.

Those are good looking heads! I love my goatskin head.

Both look great.  Enjoy!

Thanks John. This is most likely the last time I'll install a hide head, unless something happens to one of these.

I took both to my banjo lesson  this week and my instructor, Carter Laney, really made that old  Lyon & Healy sing.

It sounds better when I'm in front of it, I think.
