So I had a customer as of late who has accused me of selling him Ebony instead of Brazilian rosewood.......lol

Anyway it got me to thinking about customers and not builders and I thought this would be fun....

Which is ebony and which is Brazilain....chime in here,

the smell is totally different as is the look up close but this guy and now his friend say im selling them ebony...anyway.....

In a certain light you can tell the difference in a heartbeat so I tried to get them in a light to show the darkness of both

If it is hard for experienced wood workers to tell the difference how can we expect the  Cites inspectors to know the difference?

Photo's are not great. From what I see, I would think the top one is ebony and the bottom is braz rosewood. But really hard to tell dark rosewood from light ebony in an overexposed photograph.

From what I see in the photos, regardless of which is which, the top piece is a better piece of wood and that is the one I would want.

Hard to tell with my monitor. But the first picture looks to be Brazilian. The second Ebony.

This is a Brazilian fingerboard on a banjo I built. It's mighty dark.
