I took My Hide Head off my Banjo & I think I may put it back on.  Before I do, I would like to clean it.  Does anyone know how to safely clean one.

Thanks,  Bill Byler

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser would do a fine job with no risk of damage.

This may sound a bit strange, but I got the idea from what Joseph Rogers did with their heads.  I place the head on a round piece of wood that fits it very well all the way to the rounded edge (I route the edge of the wood), then use a Makita oscillating rotary sander with 400 grit sandpaper and carefully sand about .001" to .002" off the head.  The result is a very smooth and even head, clean as new in most cases, and as long it was not a thin head to start with, it doesn't appear to have hurt anything as far as the performance.

Once the head is clean ... protect it with clear conservators' wax.  The wax helps prevent soiling and staining.

Renaissance wax, often considered for the same uses, is widely available.
