Yesterday, unable to resist the urge to tinker, I removed the Chris Sands Heavies and Rickard no knot from my 24 3/4 scale Sagmoen Dobson and installed a Fielding tailpiece and Aquila Super Nylguts, medium 5B's. I have these strings on my Reiter A Flat and Buckee and have had no problems with breakage and they sound great to me.
On previous occasions when I tried to use Aquila strings (not Super's), I tuned the strings up over a week and still had broken strings (1 & 5) when they were tuned up to open G. Having confidence that the "Super's" were much more robust due to my experience with them on two other banjos, I thought I'd try tuning up very quickly (like I did with the Sands strings I've used for 2-3 years) and see what happens.
I put them on at 2:30 p.m. and immediately starting tuning them up. I stretched and tuned until 4:30 p.m.and they were very close to final tension. I played off and on until 9:00, tuning the strings up as required. This morning, the strings only required a small amount of tuning to get up to pitch.
I think the Super's sound better on the Sagmoen. Whether it was the strings, tailpiece or combination, who knows? The Sag now has a more "Dobsony" tone to it than it did with the Sands. The "Super's" are also a bit louder than the Sands. Having the A Flat and Sagmoen with the same strings makes switching back and forth a bit more "comfortable". (The fat 4th string of the "Super's" took me some getting used to.)
