Just wondering, when using nylon strings, whether just to tune up the 5th string say from G to A , rather than use a capo. Would nylon or nylgut strings be able to cope with constant tuning up and down over time? Thanks Mike.

Capo.

Depending on your banjo scale length, synthetics don't respond well to be tuned up to A.  The other factor is each time they are tuned to a different note (up or down) they usually require several re-tunings before they settle in to the new tension.  There is no re-tensioning with the use of a capo so you'll find that's a better option with synthetics.

Several years ago, I asked about using a spike to capo when using synthetic strings.  Many members advised that it was ok if you make sure their are no rough spots on the spike.  I cleaned the spike with fine wet / dry sandpaper.  I used to play this banjo more than I do now, but it's been several years and I have had no problems.

I spike my Aquila reds and have no problem.  You have wise advice on making sure there are no sharp areas along the string path, no matter where the string contact is.

I TUNE my Nylgut 5th string (and all the others too) up and down all the time -- a lot! They are amazingly resilient. My banjo is fretless, so the very idea of a 5th string capo is kind of creepy.
