I have been trying to get Tabwin43 to work with Windows 10 with no success. The Geek Squad worked on this problem for almost 12 hours, and actually got it to work for a short time. They think Windows 10 updates are what is screwing everything up. I think they are right, this is a Microsoft issue. I have had other issues with these updates, not just the Tabwin43 program.

Try tef view its practically the same as tabwin43 imo(sounds the same anyway)
Link: tabledit.com/tefview/ it works perfectly for win 10...
(oh and tabwin43 probably isnt compatible with windows 10 since it looks like it was a program originally designed for a older os... such as windows xp or vista possibly older...)
Edit: Keep in mind windows 10 is still in beta and may not fully support older programs...

I do have tabledit and have used it to convert Tabwin files. I just thought my experience might help others who are trying to load this program. SAnyhow, the GEEK squad did get it to work for a short time.

Klaus: Another vote for TablEdit. it's a real workhorse, and well worth the few bucks it costs. Once you own it updates are free for your lifetime. Works fine with windows 10.

Tabwin works just fine on my desktop with Windows 10. I have had a problem getting it to run on a new Lenovo laptop. I think there is something related to the install process on the Lenovo since Tabwin was already installed on my desktop when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I have created hundreds of tabs with Tabwin and like it basic, clean functionality and the fact that I know how to use it efficiently. I agree that TablEdit is the more powerful program and will upgrade at some point -- when I have time to handle the conversion and learning curve.

Another vote for Tabledit. For me, it is just about indispensable. There is far more to it than the old Tabwin program, but you don't have to master all the bells and whistles right out of the box to get started. I use the MIDI playback capability of Tabledit as a practice tool, much more satisfying than using a metronome.

Just tried installing tabwin43 some file error occurred... im guessing that due to it being last edited in 2005... or around there
dbrooks - Posted - 06/11/2016: 14:05:38
I have tried to install Tabwin on two new laptops with Windows 10 and get the same error message when I try to open the program for the first time: "Can't show a non-modal form when a modal form is displayed". Tabwin works fine on my desktop PC that was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Tabwin was on the PC before the Windows upgrade, so this new problem appears to me to be an issue with the installation process.
I know that I should switch to TablEdit, and this may force the switch. I have gotten so quick and efficient with Tabwin that I hate to switch. I also like the simple, clean look that I get with Tabwin.
Anyone have any ideas? I may try a simple copy of the program files to the laptop, but I am guessing there may be registry vhanges as well that are needed.

I don't have Win 10, still using Win 7.
The problem always has been that Tabwin cannot find the tab.ttf font file and therefore crashes. You need to manually copy this font file to the Windows fonts folder first before starting TabWin and then it works fine.
Tabwin does not have all the bells and whistles that TablEdit does but its interface as far more user friendly and the printouts are superior.

Bart, I have run into the problem with the Tab.ttf font not being copied to the Fonts directory. I believe I have done that correctly. At least I see the font file in that directory. I cannot recall if an error message was displayed when the program closed because of the missing font.
I think there is something tied to the installation process since the Tabwin43 still works after upgrading my Windows 7 desktop to Windows 10. Tabwin was already working on that machine. I have tried to install Tabwin on two laptops running Windows 10 with no luck.
I have felt, like you, that TablEdit has more features but that Tabwin is attractive because of its ease of use (for me anyway) and the clean, readable tabs it produces (again in my judgment). I do believe that TablEdit can be setup to produce similar clean looking tabs, but I haven't had the time to look closely at that.
I understand that most people on the Hangout will wonder why I am wrestling to get an old program running when it has no support and has not been upgraded in years. I guess it falls under the "your mileage may vary" heading.

The compatibility problem often is not with the program itself but with the installation, or setup, routine and Tabwin does not require it to be installed this way.
Try manually copying all the files from the installed version in the Tabwin folder on your Win 7 machine to your Win 10 machine (use a memory stick or send them over your network if you have one) instead of using the Tabwin install routine (not forgetting to put the font file into the Win 10 fonts folder).
David: yeah, I dislike the Tabledit interface and Tabwin's more intuitive

Hi David and Bart,
Maybe you could post a pdf of the desired output.
I'm confident it is possible to get something quite similar with TablEdit.
Best regards.

I would recommend a switch from TabWin to TablEdit (or to TefView depending upon whether you have a requirement to develop your own tabs, in which case it would need to be TablEdit). TablEdit is simple to use and certainly so in its 'basic' form but has enough features under the hood that you can get 'clever' with should you wish. It also produces very clean and extremely readable digital and printed tab output. Overall an excellent product for tabbing for any stringed instrument.

Matthieu, thank you for your generous offer. That is typical of the support for your product and the commitment to your customers (and potential customers) that I have seen repeatedly on the Hangout. I will follow up with you off-line with some examples, though it may take me a week or more since I am extremely busy at work. I have worked in systems for 30 years, so I am not shy about learning new software and adopting new technology. Rather, the limited time I have had available to me and the rather steep learning curve (for me anyway) have kept me from switching to TablEdit, though I use TefView and periodically write short tabs in the demo version of TablEdit. Right now, Tabwin43 is the Barlow knife that very neatly serves my needs, and I have been reluctant to try the Swiss Army knife with more power and features. I am a learner, however. And I will be in touch.
Thank you again for the generous offer.
David
P.S. By the way, I did resolve the problem I had with Tabwin43 and Windows 10, and it now works well on my new laptop. This is discussed in a related thread:
