Hello nylon twangers. How many of you tune the fifth string up a tone when going to A/D rather than use a spike?

Ive found that nylons (and nylguts) tune up to A/D just fine, though they may need a bit of stretching the first time you do it - I'd be a little worried about nicking them/breaking them in a railroad spike.

Take a tiny strip(s) of sandpaper and smooth out the spike.

I use a spike with my Nylguts. I find that Nylguts do not accept frequent retuning well, especially the 5th and 1st strings. I have tried to make sure that the spike is smooth and free of any rough or sharp edges.

I know you can use spikes, but what I suppose what really want to know is whether there are any problems with tuning up a tone. I'm using Chris sands heavies.

When I was using Nyguts I had 5th string breakage problems, so I solved it by using a regular steel string on the 5th and I never heard a mumbling word of complaint.
Right now I'm using all steel strings, but who knows? I may go back to the Nyguts sometime (but not the red ones).
