I love the Stern Tanning /JD Balch calf hide heads. I am currently using 2 on Mastertone clones that I built for Scruggs style Bluegrass. You can keep them good and tight.

I want to publicly thank jbalch for advising me on needing thinner hide heads to improve the sound of my banjos. I replaced two hide heads and it made a significant improvement in sound in both banjos. A while back I sold a banjo that I couldn't quite get the sound I wanted out of it (I tried 4 different heads). Looking back now I realize the hide head was probably too thick, choking the sound like a fiberskin head would. So, thank you John! Banjered
