Like many members suggest, I use a set of welding torch tip cleaners.  5 bucks or so at Home Depot and they do a good job.

I sometimes use a small three cornered file.  Each face is abut 1/4" wide or so and the corners are fairly sharp.  It will cut quite fast so needs to be used slowly.  On a bridge a very sharp knife is the easiest way for me.  Just cut a little down the side of each slot without making it deeper.
