I’ve just finished putting a skin head on a banjo uke I’m building. It’s not the first skin head I’ve mounted but this time I used the slightly more difficult but neater method where the raw edge you pull on is inside the rim rather than on top. Is there a name for this method? Anyway it all went reasonably well. Everything is concentric, there are no wrinkles on the flesh ring but there are bumps on the tone ring (6mm aluminium rod) because the under layer is doubled over in a few places.
My question is should the under layer be passing over the tone ring? I can’t see how to avoid this. Can it be trimmed and pulled out. I haven’t trimmed it at all yet. I could start again and try to avoid these overlaps if needs be.
I haven’t handled many banjos here in the UK with skin heads and none with this method of fitting the skin. Yes there is good stuff on YouTube but it’s not like having it your hands.

First, I am not an expert on skin heads. Having said that I would wait for the head to dry completely, disassemble the head, leave the flesh hoop in place. Then very carefully use sharp scissors to trim the excess below the level of the tone ring.
Perhaps others will post with more and better information.

I have considered doing the under method also, to avoid seeing the trimmed off part you see when mounted regular way. I don't see any way you couldn't pass the skin over the rim and/or tone ring with that mounting method. Having enough excess skin so you can pull hard when mounting helps, to try to reduce any lumpy area.
