Recently found this version of the Stanley Brothers - performing "No More The Moon Shines On Lorena" (an old song going back to the days of slavery & also cut by The Carter Family).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INcEWR-vZcQ

On youtube it's listed as being from the Chicago Folk Festival in 1965, but I'm not sure if that's correct. A set from that show has been released (with different tracks) on Ralph's Stanleytone label ("Folk Festival ST-CD 5003). On it, Larry Sparks plays lead guitar, but his breaks on the Stanleytone CD are a lot quieter compared to the guitar break on the youtube clip (around the 2.11 mark).

A mate also reckons it sounds more like George Shuffler - so does anybody know if there's another set from Chicago 65, or if this comes from a different show?

Also: when Carter introduces the song, he says it's the first time they've played it anywhere.... but there's another earlier version of it from the Berkeley 21 Sept 1962 recording...

Many thanks

Ivor

Doesn't sound like Larry Sparks to me at all.

Just in case anyone stumbles over the thread....

I've just heard that the recording is from a 2nd set at the Chicago Folk Festival 29 Jan '65, which wasn't considered clean enough soundwise to be included on the Stanleytone CD release. Carter just forgot that they'd done the song a few years earlier.

The band at the time included Red Stanley (no connection) on fiddle, Larry Sparks on lead guitar & Ray Tate standing in on bass.
