TOTW (OT) 09/11/2015 - Melvin Wine’s Sugar Baby

I’ve chosen Sugar Baby by revered West Virginia fiddler Melvin Wine (1909 – 2003) for this installment of TOTW.  The tune is upbeat and fun to play and apparently unrelated to the mournful Sugar Babe/Red Rocking Chair tune-family typified by the well-known Dock Boggs recording.

Sugar Baby has a very modest internet presence.  The normally reliable Fiddler’s Companion has no listing for the tune and I was able to find only three performances, all posted below.

The tune appeared on Wine’s 1989 Merimac release Hannah at the Spring House.  That recording is on the Slippery Hill site here:   Wine, Mullennex, & Milnes

A snippet of the tune from the CD Lost Indian – Fiddling on the Frontier is here:  Wig, Mead, & LaRose

A performance featuring lyrics as usually sung is here:  Joe & Marie Shelton

I did not find any tabs for the tune but there are transcriptions in standard notation here:  Dr. Fiddle

A review of Drew Beisswenger’s biography of Wine, Fiddling Way Out Yonder -The Life and Music of Melvin Wine, can be found  here .    An excerpt from the book is here:  Google Books.

Readers are encouraged to post facts, observations, opinions, performances and tabs contributing to this thread.

You have omitted an excellent version by The Orpheus Supertones Koken, Milliner, Allen and Peterson. Mudthumper Music MM 0020. The album title "Bound to Have a Little Fun".

Any time you choose Melvin Wine as a source you've picked a winner, Mtngoat.  Here's a pretty simple version.

There sure is a lot music under that hat Janet. Seems as soon as you pick up that banjo out comes another tune. If you can bottle that potion I will buy two bottles.

Drew Beisswenger has a notational transcription in his Ph,D, thesis "Fiddling Way Out Yonder: Community and Style in the Fiddle Mjusic of Melvin Wine, 1997, for a degree at the University of Memphis, #46, p. 485. One might contact him for a copy of the transcription..

Drew Beisswenger  [I can't seem to find his profile which would have his email address; he's an Associate Professor in Library Administration at Missouri State University in Springfield]

Love the G tunes, thanks for sharing! Hadn't heard of that particular fiddle tuning, it's interesting..
