UPS just delivered the set of friction pegs I plan to put on the travel banjo I'm building. The holes in the shafts of the pegs that the strings pass through are nice and crisp but are perhaps too sharp to avoid nicking a nylgut string.
Has anyone tweaked Sta-Tites or other steel tuning pegs to be Nylgut friendly and how have they done so?

I use a stone setting jeweler's burr to cut a 45 degree slant on the edge of the holes. I busted a steel string on a German planetary two days ago because of the same thing, and now am going to cut a slant on all the pegs I use, as it is a safe way to allow the string to transition around that 90 degree hole.

I've used a round jeweler's file for the same thing. The basic idea is to knock off the corners however you can, whatever it takes. A piece of sand paper wrapped around a small dowel would work.

With the exception of the cutoff wheel and doing some some polishing, I use my Dremel almost exclusively for woodworking. I didn't occur to me to look for a bur that could take on steel.

You can usually use a standard high speed steel twist drill to de-burr and chamfer small holes easily. Use a bit about twice the diameter of the hole to be chamfered and use it against the sharp edged hole rotating it between index finger and thumb , no drill use necessary or advised!
I've chamfered hole edges using this method for years.
