I've been experimenting with Cora Dye (p. 250 of Dear Old Illinois) thanks to some cool videos of Dan Gellert playing it (youtube.com/watch?v=tButoruSMDc and oldtimetikiparlour.com/categor...rder-now/) and that got me to wondering what other Dear Old Illinois fiddle tunes I could move to the banjo.

I've had a really enjoyable time working out Stelle Elam's Crooked Road (p. 252) and I thought I'd share. I take some liberties with the rhythm, but the melody is pretty close to what she plays. The file includes two different recordings--similar, but different!

If you play other Illinois fiddle tunes on banjo, please post in this thread. I'd love to hear them!

Thanks, Cyndy, for the tune and the link to the new publishing of Dear Old Illinois.  I wonder when it will be available....You've invited us to post other DOI tunes with.  I find "Post-a-thons" lots of fun if others join in, so here's my contribution.

I looked up old-time Tune of the Week discussions and came up with several tunes I've learned that have been presented in the last few years.  (I feel like the over-achiever  , but, oh well -- the music is sooooo good I can't help but want to learn them.)  Tabs available free for the asking.

Fun! I especially like Old Mose and Stump-Tailed Dog. And I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't played Devil in the Haystack (on fiddle) in a while. Now I'll HAVE to do it!

I'm going to have to choose a new Illinois tune to work on ...

As I am a resident of the Great State of Illinois, Illinois tunes are a requirement.  The following are all in the "Dear Old Illinois" book and are but a sampling of the wealth of tunes in that book.  The *.mp3 titles are from the tune titles themselves, while the "Illinois Tunes" *.mp3 contains Rag Rug, Crooked Road, and Crow Creek.

P.S. - Cindy and JanetB, nice to hear Illinois tunes being played in the Great(er?) State of California

Oh, wow! Thanks for adding to the list. Three of the tunes are familiar to me by title--Crow Creek, Going Down to Cairo, and Forty Miles from Georgetown but the others aren't. Fun listening ahead sometime this weekend!

So, does anyone know if the Dear Old Illinois collection was reprinted?  All my web searching leads to nothing, including cdbaby and pickaway press.  I sure would like to get a copy if its out there?

And since, I just posted a couple of Illinois tunes this week, I might as well include them here as well (didn't notice this topic until today).

Last year there was word that Dear Old Illinois would be reissued, and would be available through CDBaby, but it has not happened yet.

Here are the DOI tunes that I've posted here. At least I think they are, I don't have my copy with me. Oh, and I added Speckled Apron even though it is an Indiana tune, I learned it in a Harrison workshop.

Forgot a couple, and have an Illinois Rickett's Hornpipe redeux (I've been playing it a good bit recently).

I had forgotten that at least once in 2009 I could play Bean Walker's Mile. That's a good tune.

Erich, thanks for the update on the DOI reprint.  I had a suspicion that it hadn't come together yet. I'm at least glad that I didn't miss it.

Anybody heard Mel Durham's "Skillet Fork" recording?
Mel was a Southern Illinois fiddler that was a big influence in
in the L.A. area.

I've just started listening to the CDs and it's quite a treat.

I know a few of the tunes on fiddle and I'm hoping to figure out a few more, especially since now I'm an Illinois-to-Southern-Californian, too. :)
