I got lucky and scored two (2) NOS un-used calfskin banjo heads on ebaY.  They are vintage, premium-quality calfskin heads probably from the 1950's or 60's. The quality is certainly as good as any old head I've seen (including Rogers).

They are pre-mounted heads.  The crowns are seriously shrunk from years of storage.  But the first one fit on my Bart Reiter rim with no problem.  I installed it here to gently stretch and re-set the crown before transferring it to my 1924 B&D Silver Bell. The only evidence of age is a crease around the perimeter where the crown was originally set.

Check out the photos.

John,

I have an older example of the same logo. Unfortunately, the head has a tear and cannot be used in it's intended size.

Don:

Thanks for the photo  I have seen a couple of other versions of the crown brand too.  In two other cases, the logo was placed near the center of the top of the head so as to be very visible.

This logo is smaller and has the added "Gold Crown"  and "Super Banjo Head" descriptions.  I think the blurry writing in the lower part of the circle says "Trademark Per US pat. ofc."  Maybe it is later.

I don't have any ideal who actually made the heads...but they are high quality.

Congrats.  Those are very nice heads.  Many of the unmounted heads I see these days have places where the appearance is uneven with darker or lighter places in the head.  Also, personally, I have had trouble fitting the old Gold Tone skin heads because of the very large "flesh hoop" and the close tolerances between the tension hoop and the hooks on the inexpensive (budget) banjos I seem to end up with.  You done good!

Thanks. I think this will be a great head for my old silver bell.
