Hi All,

          Been playing this Song for a few year's now, at various pick's, thinking "it's pretty easy G,C,D straight progression". I havent really followed the melody, just sort of rolled, and licked my way through a break, when the singer asked for a break, and it seemed to work OK. So i decided to try and follow the Melody, well it's pretty hard, start's on a C, and you gotta come in on the 2nd beat. Anyone ever tried it ?

This has got to be one of the most played Song's in session's around the World, cant believe nobody's had a go at a proper Banjo break :[

This is a great song by the legend John Prine, I play it on guitar but not thought of the Banjo, I will have to try. the original has some great guitar picking on it
Just found a version by Streamline that has a 5 string break on it.

I've been playing the tune for years on both banjo and Reso. Love all of John Prines music.

I have never seen anyone do a Banjo break on this Tune that follow's the Melody. Could you post it John, or Redstar, just wanna see how it's done :)

If I had a video of a band I'm in playing it with banjo, I would post it for you. What you need to do is follow the vocal line-its the melody. Make your break 'speak the words'.

Thank's Guy's. I have figured a lovely break out, that follow's the Melody spot on. I will post a Vid with my mate doing the Guitar work, and Vocal's in the not to distant future :)

I've also been playing this song for years on the guitar. Great song. Even though I'm a new player I can chord it but will have to put it on my list of songs tor picking with the banjo.

Yep Robert, it's not as straight forward on the Banjo, but it's worth pickin it out, because it's such a played Song

Eddie...your right about that. With the limited time I've been playing banjo I chorded the song this afternoon but picking it...hmmm...gonna be awhile on that I'm afraid. Also got into chording...thats the way that the world goes round, also by John Prine. I'd like to pick that one too someday.
