As some Roman said, a few centuries before the birth of Jesus:

"It is not what occurs, but how we choose to feel about it, which determines whether or not we are happy".

So, am I choosing to over-react to a public accusation?

Over on the Isis/Rome thread, an accusation was made.

A fellow who, in all other respects, appears to be a kind, decent, and thoughtful person, accused me of deliberately attempting to get the thread shut down.

I sent him a private message, pointing out a few noticeable facts.

1. I had not posted quotes from any religious texts, but had only posted links, which people could choose to ignore.

2. Before I posted the links, there were at least eighteen other references to religions, including  two quotes from the Bible.

I objected to him claiming to KNOW why I posted what I posted.

His reply indicated that he was reasonably certain that he was right to have made the accusation, and felt no impulse to apologize publicly or privately.

When a person who has never met you, publicly and falsely  claims to know your innermost real  (and nasty!) motives, and is neither a night-club magician doing a "Mind-Reader" act, nor a trained psychoanalyst who has spent several sessions getting to know what your real and nasty motives for anything MIGHT be, and it is a person whose opinions you otherwise respect, what SHOULD the appropriate reaction be?

maybe he IS omniscient?  (I admit to not reading much of that thread; found the first part a bit too chaotic for my tastes)

The well worn Internet Tradition of Flaming, I would think.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with your post Mike. You just provided links for anyone who might be interested.

I saw that when it happened.  All I can say is that a better judge of character might have already known you well enough from all your other posts that you would not do that kind of thing.  I've only been a member for a few months and already look forward to hearing what you have to say because it is invariably intelligent, well-observed, straightforward and funny and never cruel.  I would have thought if you wanted a thread closed down you would have said so.  Whenever people say nasty things I always think they must be unhappy people, because I can't imagine anyone who is a happy person saying stuff like that.  He deserves only your pity.  Don't grant precious living time on that kind of behaviour.  I like what you have to say, and I bet I'm not the only one!

I appreciate the compliment, although I will join with those who notice that the intelligence of my posts DOES vary considerably, especially when I'm trying to be deliberately silly.

And, no, am not into "Flaming".

Like I said: It only bothers me because the fellow is usually so fair, kind, and reasonable in most of his other posts.

It was his private reply that he seemed certain that I ( and NONE of the eighteen previous)  deserved to be accused, which really puzzled me.

If he was someone known for being nasty, I would have ignored it.

Lol! big What I actually said (and you're welcome to post my humorously intentioned reply to your private message) is that if you post religious content which is against BHO posting rules you by definition know that is likely to get a thread locked.

Note the words: 'by definition'.

I claim no special mind-reading abilities. Just a basic awareness of cause and effect. shock

In the same way that if I deliberately omit my pants when I leave the house it's not mind-reading to conclude that I must've intended to be escorted home in the back of a police car. winkshock

I was wondering:

Why specifically me, and none of the previous eighteen posts mentioning religions?

And most specifically, why not the one quoting chapter and verse, word-for-word, from the Bible, as what seems to be a criticism- by THAT poster-  of the Christian Bible's  attitude towards women??

That's all I really wanted to know. Why single me out and claim to know WHY I did it??

Such is the quicksand nature of a forum with rules against religious and political and personal attacks, where such arguments and attacks are routinely allowed.

Mike, a straight answer to a straight question: because that thread had become wonderful unintentional comedy. Yours was the first rule breaking post after the comedy really kicked in that threatened to have that comedy needlessly ended by a lock-out.

And if you read my reply to your original PM you will see that I explained  that quite matter-of-factly. It's not personal. Other than my personal gratuitously selfish desire to keep the humour rolling... evilwink

If that offended you I apologise as I have no intention to offend anyone. smiley

Just kidding,
