I found a seller on eBay that had several different-sized canteen gourds, and he had one that was 9" dia. and 6" deep, which was about what I was looking for.

Had to smile at this one. My first banjo teacher, a fellow by the name of Ike Bacon gave me one when I told him I was having trouble finding time to practice but was hoping to get around to it. He went over to his work bench where he built banjos in his spare time, pulled out one and handed it over with a big grin. Don't know how long he had been waiting to do that but we both had a good laugh.

Looks great noah. How ya figure out the heal cut? In all the gourd instruments I've built, that was always the hardest part. Especially with a removable neck.

Btw, the walnut plate and s-curves was a "creative mistake." (I originally was going to have the oak piece from the nut to the seventh, ending in an s-curve, and have the rest walnut, but I ended up cutting part of it off in error, thinking I had enough excess from it for the peghead overlay, so decided to add a second piece of oak, having another s-curve going from the 10th to the 12th fret.) And as seen, I decided to make it different from the usual gourds with wooden friction pegs and made it with a slotted peghead, and a tunneled fifth string.
The star sound hole under the end of the dowel was another "mistake;" I had drilled the hole for the dowel too low, so decided to incorporate the first out of the 13 star sound holes (since it's #13).

David Hyatt still graciously has his complete gourd banjo building manual in draft form free to download from his website. It has the instructions for fitting the neck to the gourd body.

I'm enjoying my gourd so much that I'm thinking about selling my Nate Calkins gourd. It's something how much difference there is in sound between them (mine seems to be "warmer," while the Calkins is more snappy). If anyone would be interested in the Calkins gourd, just shoot me an email. I might get an ad up in the next day or so, along with another one of my mountain banjos that I've decided to sell.
