A great festival, if not the finest.   I have been attending since the early 80's (when it was called Winterhawk, and on the old location on the other side of the Hudson River).   At my age, I rarely stay up late, let alone stay up all night.  But at Greyfox, I can still pull it off.  Jamming with folks as the sun sets ...and still picking when it comes back up on the other side !

Lagniappe Productions Assumes Full Ownership of Rhythm & Roots

Effective immediately, Lagniappe Productions and Grey Fox Bluegrass Festivals have reached an agreement whereby Lagniappe Productions has acquired full ownership of the annual Rhythm & Roots Festival. This transition means that Lagniappe Productions is now the sole producer of this annual event held every Labor Day weekend at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, RI. The dates for this year are September 4, 5 & 6, 2015. More information will be posted on the Rhythm & Roots Festival website,www.rhythmandroots.com and Facebook page -facebook.com/rhythmandroots - shortly.

Ticket Sale Snafu

We offer our apologies for not having our ticket page up and running on Sunday, February 1 as previously advertised. Due to technical difficulties, we were unable to get our weblink for Rhythm & Roots ticket sales active for our internet-only “Super Saver Sale”. We are working on the problem now. Ticket order information will be sent to our mailing list and posted to our website and Facebook page soon.

2015 Ticket Information

Once these tickets are gone, a limited number of Early Bird 3 day camping tickets ($195 each) and 3 day without camping tickets ($135 each) will be offered for sale. When the Early Birds are gone, the advance prices will take effect.

35 Year Celebration

This year, Lagniappe Productions will be celebrating 35 years of Labor Day weekend music festivals in Rhode Island. We began back in 1981 working with Bay Area music producer Franklin Zawacki of Cajun Music Ltd. out in the wilds of Escoheag, RI. After 17 years of the Cajun & Bluegrass Festival, Mary Tyler Doub of Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival partnered up with Lagniappe Productions in 1998 and the Rhythm & Roots festival at Ninigret Park was born. Another 17 year cycle of great music, dance and food was concluded this year with the dissolution of the Rhythm & Roots / Grey Fox partnership. Like a cicada, Lagniappe Productions begins a third 17 year cycle with the 2015 Rhythm & Roots Festival. We are in the process of putting together a lineup of talent that we guarantee will be the best R&R festival ever.

This year’s Ball will be held on Saturday, February 28 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, RI. Appearing will be Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet, Corey Ledet and his Zydeco Friends and The Extraordinary Rendition Marching Band. The Grey Fox line up is GREAT!

I'm so excited. I just can't hide it.

Looking forward to seeing Pete Rowan at Grey Fox again.  He was a mainstay for many years, but hasn't been around the last few times.   I don't think he puts much effort into writing or learning new material anymore, but that's ok.  Always enjoy Panama Red, Midnight Moonlight, Land of Navajo, Free Mexican Airforce, etc.

                         Press Release 7/2/15

Banjo Greats Gather at Grey Fox for Keith-Style Banjo Summit

The gracious banjo maestro, Bill Keith, shaking hands with Jonny Cody after playing ‘Devil’s Dream’ together at a campsite during Grey Fox 2013—fifty years from the day that Bill first played it with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.

Surely a highlight of this year’s Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival will be a very special Keith-Style Banjo Summit hosted by Béla Fleck, Abigail Washburn, and Tony Trischka. As if this “Triple Crown of Banjo” wasn’t enough, joining them on stage to honor the music and influence of Bill Keith will be the award-winning Eric Weissberg, Mike Munford, Marc Horowitz, Mike Kropp, Ryan Cavanaugh and others—along with Bill Keith himself. The 90-minute Keith-style banjo gathering will be on Friday, July 17 beginning at 7:00pm at the Creekside Stage.

Banjoist extraordinaire Bill Keith (beaconbanjo.com) is one of just a handful of musicians to have a whole style named after him. The Keith style was the catalyst that spawned new generations of envelope pushers such as Tony Trischka, Béla Fleck and Noam Pikelny. Bill has worked with The Jim Kweskin Jugband, Jim Rooney, Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Judy Collins, Clarence White, Richard Greene and David Grisman. His 1963 Decca recordings with Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys introduced his innovations to a world audience. Bill also wrote the Earl Scruggs banjo instruction book. Last October, the IBMA honored Bill with a richly deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.

One of I Love NY’s Seven Music Festivals Not to Be Missed

It’s really no wonder that I Love NY Tourism picked Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival among its “Seven Music Festivals Not to Be Missed” in 2015. A Who’s Who of Bluegrass Music in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of Greene County, Grey Fox features more than 40 bands, 170 performances, and dozens of workshops on five stages. Each year, music seekers from 30+ states and a dozen countries gather at the Walsh Farm to enjoy four days of camping, jamming, dancing, kids activities, festive foods, artisanal vendors, and more.

 All Star Lineup

Grey Fox consistently presents an all-star lineup of the most celebrated musicians in bluegrass, and its roots and branches. Held Thursday through Sunday, July 16-19, on the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill, NY, and hosted by the Dry Branch Fire Squad, fans will see: The Del McCoury Band; Hot Rize; The Sam Bush Band; The Infamous Stringdusters; Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn; Greensky Bluegrass; Balsam Range; The SteelDrivers; Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers with Special Guest, Elmo Otto; Steep Canyon Rangers; The Gibson Brothers; Della Mae; The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band; Mr. Sun; Michael Daves and Friends (Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge, Brittany Haas, Jen Larsen, and Mike Bub); Joe Craven; Billy Strings & Don Julin; Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore; The HillBenders; Mike Compton & Joe Newberry; Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen; Scythian; Love Canon; Front Country; I Draw Slow; Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys; Shyam Nepali & Raj Kapoor; Rushad Eggleston; Bruce Molsky, Tony Trischka & the Berklee All-Stars; The Stray Birds; Wood & Wire, Mile 12; The Mark Whitaker Band; Wrong is Right; The Wiles; Abby Hollander Band; Ethan Jodziewicz and Tatiana Hargreaves; The Zolla Boys; and more!

A GATHERING OF THE BELOVED KIND

While the lineup is always jaw-dropping on all five stages at Grey Fox, the festival is known far and wide for its friendly family camping scene, stellar bluegrass jams that go well into the night, emerging artist showcases that help launch musical careers, and memorable learning opportunities for players of all levels and for casual listeners and die-hard fans alike. All of these factors combine to make it the place to be for acoustic music seekers each July.

Bluegrass Today: Fleck, Trischka and friends honor Bill Keith at Grey Fox Banjo Summit

I'm thrilled and honored, as a longtime Grey Fox video media volunteer,

to have captured the entire historic, emotional event celebrating my

good friend Bill Keith. I have footage from 4 camcorders and will be

gathering still photos and additional video from my fellow media crew

members. The entire coverage will eventually be available on the Grey

Fox website and YouTube channel. Please be patient while all the sources

are gathered. My sincere thanks to all those who envisioned this event

and made it a reality!

After a two-month journey, I'm proud to finally announce the most involved, historic, and emotional event and video

I've ever attended and recorded and edited. It's a gathering of some greats* to celebrate the genius of my good friend,

Bill Keith.

* Ryan Cavanaugh, Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka, Marc Horowitz, Mike Kropp, Mike Munford, Noam Pickelny, and Eric Weissberg

My sincere thanks to the great artists, Tom Lindtveit, Grey Fox Assistant Director Mary Burdette, Grey Fox Media Crew

Chief Steve Ide, and Claire Armbruster, for envisioning and helping make this event and my video a reality.

And above all, my thanks to Bill Keith for being an inspiration to me for over four decades and a good friend for many years.

Thank you Fred. I brought my three year old this year and wasn't able to catch more than the first 10 min or so at the time. We had a great time, but I'm very happy to be able to finally catch this.

Before the festival, a good friend (you know who you are!) told me this set was important to record.

So I planned on it, not knowing what to expect.

Well, before it was over, I could not imagine not having seen this incredible performance!

Here's just one example...

Hi Folks,

Recently Happy Traum posted my photo of him and and Eric Weissberg at Grey Fox 2015 before the Keith Style Banjo Summit..

Well, today, since the pre-Christmas scramble has quieted down, I was finally able to take some time

and put together the few photos I took before recording the historical event.

frobbi.org/slides/prekeithsummit/

I hope you enjoy the bittersweet memories as much as I have.

I want to repeat my sincere thanks for all the generous and talented members of our extended bluegrass family

that made this historic and emotional tribute possible.

And my wishes to all for a blessed holiday season and a healthy and musical New Year.

A great festival, but they're running the cost up more by charging you to have your vehicle at the campsite, a security need, and they know it.  We're not going to leave valuable instruments unsecured in tents.  Perhaps they should get a bigger venue if it's that much of an issue.  They limit sales to 4000 camping, and they always fit in the past.  Just more money grabbing.

Here's a fun pre- (or maybe post-) holiday music from a lot of young talent,
