Steel strings generally print the string diameters on the packaging.  Most nylon strings, apparently do not.  I'm changing to Nylgut strings, making a lighter bridge, and replacing the original plastic nut with bone.  I bought both the red set, and the regular ( with red fourth) so I could try both.  I have a complete set of StewMac graduated nut files, and it would be a lot easier to do a proper set up if I didn't have to go by trial and error to start the notches.  I realize that synthetic or gut strings are not as precise as steel, but there should be some useful information somewhere.

Someone on here several months back posted a list of all the brands of nylon strings including nylon fishing line and their decimal sizes but I can't remember who it was. I made a copy and if I can find it I'll post it, or hopefully someone will know who it was.

The nylon gauge postings were done by john bange. They were posted or linked to Long Neck Banjo Group. He always had a wrapped 4th, but recently discovered harp strings allowing all unwrapped nylon.

hmm, that pdf states the reds are about the same diameter as the regular lights.  i don't believe that to be true based on visual memory.  i think i have a few sets of nylgut classics kicking around (a mixture of regulars and lights), along with several sets of the reds, and will compare the two.

if i'm wrong i'll certainly retract my claim.  but i don't recall the reds being anywhere near as thick as any of the whites.

There should be no reason whatsoever to post this question - it would be pretty cool, and in their best interest, if the Aquilla folks would eliminate the guesswork and set us straight. I'm sure all the folks modifying their nuts and bridges to make the Aquilla strings work problem free on their banjos would be hugely appreciative...

Aquila has one of the least informative websites I've ever seen. This really would be simple for them to correct.
