Love your Reno picking John! I was really impressed with your "Flopped Eared Mule" video you posted a while back too. You really have that single string down great! I wish I could do it that clean! Don would really be proud! You were lucky to get to meet him. I was born in 1978 so I was just a kid when passed in 1984. Thanks for helping keep Reno style alive and picking!

Hey Jason thanks! I was fortunate to meet and watch Don play several times when I was younger. Each time I was amazed at what he was doing on that banjo. Just when I thought, "oh, I could do that", he would do something that would knock my sox off. His single string playing was just a part of his style. His choice of rolls, chordal playing and his way of using thumb brushes all made up his style. There was so much he could do on a banjo. Thanks for sharing my videos. My banjo is a 1933 Gibson TB-2 conversion I bought in '86.

Well it's a great banjo! But great banjos don't sound great by themselves. It takes a great picker to make them sound that way....And you're a great picker! Don would be proud of ya! And you're right about Don's playing. People sometimes associate Reno style as just single string but there is so much more to what made Don great. I think his thumb brushing is a more defining part of his style than the single string technique. That whole first box set was single string free and they were some of his best and most famous recordings. But like you said it was everything...the rolls, the chordal stuff, the single string, the brush, and just his ingenious ways of putting it al together.
