So, how does one successfully put a Nylgut 5th string on a Five Star Planet 5th string tuner?
Thus far, I've broken two of the three in my possession.
I took my time, 2 1/2 days. I unwound and removed some excess string, about two to three inches.
Today, just as all five strings were actually approaching their respective tunings, the second 5th string broke.
I think the problem is the amount of string that ends up on the tuner shaft eventually brings it into contact with the metal surrounding the shaft and cuts it.
Any ideas or should I use something besides Nylgut in that position?
Any problem with mixing brands or composition?

You need to debur and slightly chamfer the edges of the hole in the tuner capstan. You can use an oversized drill bit to do a passable job of this.
You might consider posing this question to the polymer strings group and/or the building, setup, and repair board.

This tuner does not have the post angled off, but is straight going into the neck.
I think I'm going to have to replace it with the angled tuner.

I can see this not ever working because I always wind up with a big wad of string on the posts as the strings finally stretch in, and there's a limited amount of space on the spool. It's the same issue as too much string on a fishing reel. I believe that I'd change the tuner out for a standard geared tuner.
