I really like that knot in the heel. Neck and dowel looks like walnut. Nice round heel. 38 tension hooks. Hardware still has most of the plating left.
Guess this Buckbee's a middle grade, judging by the pics. Not the very bottom, but not the top either.

Probably receive it Wednesday. Got the parts (tuners, head, etc.) when I bought it, except for the No Knot tailpiece I wanted (they were out, wouldn't get more for a month).

Update: Haven't been on the BHO for a couple of days (was jamming at the Pigtown Fling in Augusta Friday and Saturday -- played this Buckbee there also).

When I got the original head off, the top of the hoop had grooves cut into it, allowing for the hooks and tension hoop to be lowered without the hooks cutting the head.
Anyone else seen this on other Buckbees? Or on other older banjos?

Yes, it was pretty common as is the fake clad rims. In this case the cladding is just for show. It looks like a real clad rim while they save the labor (and the cost of the wire) of "spinning" it over a wire on the top. Faster and cheaper to build meant higher profits for music stores and pawnshops.
Does not mean that they aren't fun to play or don't sound good, just that they were budget instruments to start.

Awesome! I love the look of the banjos with all the hooks, you know the reasoning for all the hooks back in the day is that it was said that the more hooks the better the banjo, but man are they a hassle whenever you have to put a new head on or something like that.

I'll say that the hooks helped me a little when putting the new head on - I had a hard time trying to get the tension hoop off (with the old head) to begin with, but it was even harder trying to put the new head on because the tension hoop was really tight, and I couldn't get it to slip on over the top of the rim on one side. So, I added a hook, tightened, and repeated until the hooks pulled it over.
