I have skin head openback banjos. I comfortable with the banjo tone in a rather wide zone, so being precise for purposes of sound isn't that important to me, at least within reason. I prefer a plunky tone, but that's about it. I also like to make sure the nuts on the tension hooks are tight, as they tend to come loose when I play, particularly with the banjo on my lap while sitting. Anyway, I tend to use the general "thump" test to see about head tension. I don't want to tear a skin head if I can help it by getting the nuts too tight. What's the upper range for being perfectly safe on head tension using the thump test. Is it a G, or a tad higher or lower, what's the safe zone? I just want to keep it simple, but I also want to keep the skin head safe, and I'm not looking for a bright ringing BG tone on the upper end. Thanks.

I have used a drum dial to try to set the tension on skin heads. As stated here on BHO, it doesn't work. When I tried the Steve Davis head tensioning method the tone of my banjos really came to life. Look up Steve's method here on BHO or see the Tom Berghan write up of this technique on the skin heads group. Try it, you'll like it. Good luck.
