Cello Banjo tuned gCGCD.
An Arabic melody that I learned many years ago from the singing of an Irish American friend. I haven't been able to find the tune in this version. It's possible he made it up, being known to doing such things. In any event, it's a melody that sticks with me - one of those 'phone numbers' that ring through to an exotic mood.
From what I can glean off the Internet, "Jamil" means beautiful. "Abaya" is a loose overgarment, the purpose of which is to conceal the shape of a woman’s body.

So beautiful, as always, Paul.
Yes, "jamil" means beautiful in Arabic. The garment you refer to has many names in different parts of the Arab world - in Egypt it is called a "galabeyyya". It is worn by both men and women (I think the Abaya you refer to is the all-encompassing black garment worn by muslim women) but the galabayya is also a garment commonly worn by men - it is a loose covering designed to keep the body cool (also called a dishdasha, the flowing white robes worn by the men in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen and the more southern Arabic countries).
Anyway, I digress from your wonderful playing - you have instantly transported me back to some very happy days in the Middle East.

It is oudy. I tried a fretless one, thinking you could get neat slides, ala Indian music, but it killed the sustain, not having the frets. And the sustain on this thing is what makes it soar.

Always enjoy your posts Paul, especially these middle eastern ones that one rarely hears here, and the CB adds an even more authentic sounding flavor to my ears at least.
