Just bought an older banjo, the skin head is way too slack, yet the flesh hoop is all the way down almost touching the neck, so the hooks cannot be tightened any extra. The banjo could really benefit from more tension on the head. I'm very familiar with bluegrass style banjos and plastic heads but not familiar with skin heads. Is there any possible way to remove the slack? Maybe dampening it with water and use hair dryer or ?? I hate to get stuck into mounting a new skin head (as I've never done one), and the stock skin head is perfect on this old banjo which is from the 50's I guess. Thanks in advance for your time to read and share your experience, Brett.

You can try loosening the head, wetting a bit and drying then retightening, but it will be temporary. Bottom line is you'll be better off replacing the head. Unless your banjo is a very odd size, you can get premounted skin heads: banjohangout.org/group/hideheads/blog/4353
